Rebbetzin Batya Barg z”l — A Legacy of Faith, Courage, and Chesed

In the shadow of the Holocaust, Rebbetzin Batya Barg z”l emerged as a shining light of faith and resilience. Born in Kyiv, she endured the deepest darkness — six of her beloved brothers were murdered in Babi Yar, one of the most horrific killing sites of the war. Yet from that ravine of tears, she drew strength, faith, and an unshakable sense of purpose: to rebuild Jewish life from the ashes.
After surviving the horrors of war and the suffocating years of Soviet rule, Rebbetzin Batya Barg z”l devoted her life to helping others hold on to their Jewish souls. She would later recount her near-death experience — how her soul ascended, saw her life in review, and was sent back with a divine mission: to bring light where there was darkness, and hope where there was despair.

A School Born from the Heart

When Rebbetzin Batya Barg z”l arrived in Israel, her heart was drawn to the girls no one believed in — young women from painful and broken homes, each one carrying her own silent story. Together with her devoted student and partner, Rebbetzin Esther Ben-Haim, she opened a small school with a big dream: to give these girls faith, education, and a second chance at life.
That humble beginning became Netiv Batya, the school that today carries her name and her spirit.
For more than 20 years, the two women — Rebbetzin Barg z”l and Rebbetzin Ben-Haim — worked hand-in-hand, side by side, guiding, comforting, and believing in every girl who walked through the door. The school was not just her project — it was her life.

The Birth of Yam HaChesed

Out of this shared vision grew Yam HaChesed, the organization that became the heart of all her work. Together, Rebbetzin Barg z”l and Rebbetzin Ben-Haim traveled the world — speaking, teaching, and awakening Jewish hearts across continents.
Everywhere they went, Jews were moved by her story — her unwavering faith, her tears, and her courage. Many of them became her partners, helping her build and sustain Netiv Batya and the programs that grew around it.
Through Yam HaChesed, she created a circle of compassion that continues to touch thousands of lives — in Israel and beyond.

Her Legacy Lives On

Today, Rebbetzin Esther Ben-Haim continues that sacred mission — leading Netiv Batya – Rebbetzin Barg School, and expanding the reach of Rebbetzin Batya Barg z”l’s vision through Spark JLM, a program inspired by the same love for kiruv and Jewish unity that she embodied.
What began as one woman’s dream has become a movement — connecting generations, empowering young women, and lighting Jewish souls around the world.
